The Path to Purity: Battling Lust With Love

“How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to Your Word.”
Psalms 119:9

If only it were that simple. It’s never an easy task to align ourselves with the Word of God. But, nothing worthwhile is ever easy, right? Obeying God’s Word is a process that leads to bringing our flesh under submission, but it doesn’t happen overnight. This kind of lifestyle shift transforms you over time, from the inside out. But how?

What’s in your heart?

Seek the Lord, not with your mind, but with your heart.

“I seek You with all my heart; do not let me stray from Your commands.
I have hidden Your Word in my heart
that I might not sin against You.”
Psalms 119:10-11

When we open our hearts to the Lord, He gives us the power to fight the battles we face every day. If we want to win, we must turn to Him instead of turning to those desires which cause us to stumble.

Love vs. Lust

It’s really a matter of love vs. lust. One emanates from the heart, and motivates us to be selfless, giving, and good. The other motivates us to think only of what makes us feel good in the moment. Love for the Father cannot exist in the heart of one who lusts after worldly desires.

“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world,
love for the Father is not in them.”
1 John 2:15

Committing ourselves to someone without love for them, even God, is an exercise in futility. Immersing ourselves in the Word helps us to understand how much God loves us, while also inspiring us to love Him back.
To know God is to love God

Before marriage, couples spend time getting to know each other. They talk for hours, write each other love notes, and fall deeper in love. This is a model we can follow as we’re getting to know the Lord.

“God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin.
Then each of you will control his own body
and live in holiness and honor —
not in lustful passion like the pagans
who do not know God and His ways.”
1 Thessalonians 4:3-5

It’s unlikely that we’ll stay away from the things that God warns us about when we don’t know Him. If we’re going to be successful at staying away from sexual sin, we must spend time talking to God, reading His Word, and falling deeper in love with Him.

Meditate on these

If you’re tired of battling sexual sin alone, I encourage you to meditate on the following Scriptures day and night. Add them to your daily prayer time as you’re getting to know God better.

I would also encourage you to listen to Christian meditations using the Abide app, because faith comes by hearing. And, I pray that the love of God fills up every space in your heart, so there’s no more room for worldly desires, in the Name of His Son Jesus Christ. Amen.
