Our Abide community is filled with faithful members and inspiring stories. We're going to start sharing our member's testimonies. We hope you're encouraged!
This week we're featuring Leslie- the mother of 6(!) sons, an Atlanta resident, and an avid writer. When I spoke with Leslie on the phone, I was immediately struck by her soothing voice and calm demeanor. I was humbled to hear how Abide has helped her.
Location: Atlanta, GA
Family members: My husband of 30 years (this October), our 6 sons, 1 awesome daughter-in-law, 3 beautiful grandkids
Occupation: I’m a writer at heart (as yet unpublished)and an independent insurance agent to pay the bills.
Hobbies: Hmm...I’m somewhat of a news junkie (presently on hiatus due to the overwhelming nature of the news these days). I just enjoy quiet time reading and listening to music whenever I’m not surrounded by family members
How did you come to know Jesus?
I was 21 when I learned I actually could know Jesus personally. My father, who lived in another state, said God told him that I would need him. So, my earthly father moved to be near me. He didn’t know it, but I really was in a personal crisis. My father led me to accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior and to repent of sin. I did exactly as he told me, devouring as much teaching as I could. I haven’t looked back since.
How has God been working in your life?
God has been working in my life every day, even before I knew Him. I see that now. But this year has been an emotional roller coaster for me for many reasons. It had been smooth sailing for so long, I almost forgot what it was like to struggle. God reminded me that He’s with me in comfort as well as in turmoil, giving me instruction, correction, and grace all at the same time.
How did you discover Abide?
A friend shared the Abide app with me when I was having unexplained headaches. I went for an MRI, and, during that torturous waiting period for the results, thoughts of doom tried to take over my mind. I found myself begging God to heal me of whatever it was, and that’s when I started listening to the healing meditations back to back every day. They gave me a sense of peace, and helped me fight the fear of the unknown. The MRI results came back negative, and the headaches started to subside, but I didn’t stop listening to Abide. It has become a wonderful habit.
How long have you been using Abide for?
I think it’s been a little over a year now.
What’s your daily meditation routine look like?
Listening to Abide is usually the first thing I do in the morning, before my eyes are even ready to focus. I listen to the daily meditation, then listen to a few of those listed below it. Often times I’ll forward a favorite meditation or two to family members, or save them in the notepad on my phone to listen again days or weeks down the line. I’ve also shared them on my social media pages.
What has changed in your life since you started using Abide?
I’ve become more bold in expressing my faith. I used to be more of a private Christian, careful not to be accused of “proselytizing” or offending anyone.
Listening to Abide has helped me to see that sharing Christ is more about love and encouragement.
It has modeled for me how to share my faith with others in the same nurturing way.
What advice would you give others who want to start Christian meditation?
Like Jesus told the storm, I would tell them, “Peace. Be still.” Abide can set the tone by getting you in the right frame of mind.
But then turn off everything, including your mind. Begin praising God from the depths of your soul and allow your mouth to speak what’s in your heart. Sing. Weep. Then listen intently with your spiritual ears. That’s when He speaks.
Anything else you’d like to share?
The world has every tool under the sun to occupy the minds and hearts of the vast majority of people on earth. We are bombarded with images and information, and overloaded to the point of mental exhaustion.
Abide helps those of us who don’t participate in eastern meditation, not just to empty the mind and leave it vacant for who knows what kinds of forces to occupy it. But listening to Abide helps us to replenish the mind with what it needs, the living Word.
To join Leslie and others who've experienced a renewed spirit, try meditating with Abide. We'd love for you to join our community.
