I'm An Overwhelmed Mom. Here's How I Find My Inner Peace.

My life is full. When my four kids are home, they are constantly vying for attention. They need help with their homework. They’re hungry. They want to play a game. My brain is constantly hopping from one thing to the next.

I recently hired a life coach because I felt untethered. I was feeling the effects of all the pulls in my life. Her advice? Do things intentionally for myself. Go inside into my inner world. Look at what I might find there, asking God to lead me there. I was so used to being so focused on the outside; I didn’t have time to think about the inside.

Yet, it’s important to think about the inside because that’s who we are. Outside is only where we live.

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb” Psalm 139:13

In theory it sounds great to look at the inside. But how do I get there when my outside world is chaos? I love quiet. But my four kids don’t do quiet very well unless they’re unconscious or asleep. I’d have to wait until eternity to have quiet time.

As A Busy Mom, Here Are Four Ways I Try To Find My Inner Peace:

1. Take 10 minutes for myself each day.
I have to have my own quiet time every day or I die. I don’t think it’s healthy for me to not have quiet and enter my inner world at least once a day. These ten minutes happen at different times, depending on the day- after I drop by kids off at school, in between errands, or when I’m waiting in the car. These 10 minutes can be combined with doing other activities, such as the following:

  • Going for a walk
  • Doodling in a coloring book
  • Closing my eyes
  • Letting my mind float
  • Knitting

Sometimes I don’t even have 10 minutes for myself. In those cases, I turn to something else.

2. Sing my favorite song or blast it on the stereo.
Sometimes all I can hear is noise. When my kids are at home after school, it can be a constant chorus of noise. In those time, I try a different tactic.

I fight fire with fire! If your world is shoving into your brain, shove back! Push into your inner world! Music is great for this. When your surroundings are loud and chaotic, don’t let your environment dictate where your mind goes. Don’t be like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

My college pastor said, “Don’t be a thermometer. Be a thermostat". I can’t say that I knew what the heck he was talking about at the time. It’s beginning to make more sense now.

3. Intentionally do things that are important to me.
I have to give myself permission to do something like go practice ice skating. It’s not like wasting my time surfing the net. I have a real target where I’m intentionally working toward something important.

4. Finally, meditate on scripture.
I want to tell you some secrets God told me in the quiet.

“Don’t let your mind be troubled.” John 14:1

How to do this? We can decide what we think about. In life we often feel pushed from one task to the next. Choose what you think about. God is always in the choices. He is always wanting us to exercise our free will and to choose wisely.

These are verses I have on the back of my hand-

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16.33

“So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.” Romans 8:6

Sometimes I need help getting in a reflective state- one in which I can find my inner peace. For those times, I turn on a worship song or listen to a prayer.

I listen to the Abide verse of the day, which usually takes 2 minutes. These minutes jump start my quiet time and allow me to enter the right mindset. Click below to be guided through one of my favorite prayers.

*“Be still, and know that I am God”.

Easier said than done, but I hold on to these promises in the word.

As mothers, we need to invest in ourselves. We’re constantly pouring into other people- our children, our husband, our parents, and friends. We must take the time to recharge and find our inner peace. It's in these moments that God reveals Himself to us- and gives us the strength to keep fighting the good fight.
