Prayer as an Anger-management Tool

Anger is an emotional state of mind that can range from mild irritation to uncontrolled rage. Many think of anger as a “secondary emotion,” since it’s typically a response to another emotion like hurt, fear. or sadness. Anger management is a key to living a healthy lifestyle and maintaining strong relationships.

Anger management includes learning to recognize your anger “triggers,” taking actions to pro-actively calm down, and dealing with the situation productively. Anger management is not a method for holding anger in, rather it’s a tool to help you learn to express it appropriately.

While it’s totally normal to feel these emotions from time to time, its important to deal with anger head-on. Use these prayers for anger management to start tackling your anger today.

Prayer for Anger Management

Dear Heavenly Father, I admit that I have sinned in my anger. Please forgive me for this. Help me forgive myself. And for the people I’ve hurt in my anger, please speak to their heart and let them forgive me. God, I know when I act on my anger it separates me from You. I feel it. That’s the last thing I want. I need your love, strength, guidance, and forgiveness in every area of my life. Thank you for Jesus. Thank you for loving me no matter what. Fill me with your love, Heavenly Father. In Jesus’s name I pray, amen.

Prayer for Reining in Your Anger

Dear Heavenly Father, I know you are with me. And I know you love me. Let me feel your love. Pour your love over the areas in my life that need it the most. Where there is anger, replace it with your peace. Revive any area where bitterness has made a home. Show me why it is hard sometimes to reel in my anger. Help me to reign over my emotions. Help me to be more like you. In Jesus’s name, I pray, amen.

Prayer for Letting it Go

Dear Lord, I confess that sometimes when I’m offended I lash out in anger, or I let my hurt feelings lead me to despair. Please give me a discerning heart and a peace-loving spirit, so that I will know when to let an offense go, when to learn from it, and when to respond to it. Help me to love as you love, with confidence and patience and tenderness. In the name of Jesus I pray, amen.

Prayer to Uncover Your Hurts

God, I come before you today in need of healing. I’m broken, and hurting, and I don’t want to try to hide it or pretend that I’m okay. I need you. I need forgiveness and restoration. I need to be made new. And I believe that you have made me new, and that you are making me new every day. I believe that your mercies are new every morning. God, please meet me in my sadness, tend to my hurts, heal me, and make me whole. It’s in Jesus’s name that I pray, amen.

Just as you wouldn’t hide a physical wound and pretend it doesn’t exist, emotional wounds need to be treated too. When left ignored or hidden, emotional wounds can lead to anger. But when you uncover your hurts, God is ready to heal. Use these prayers to help manage your anger and heal your wounds.
