Abide July 4 Survey Reveals How Americans Pray for our National Leaders

Scripture reads in Psalms 33:12 (ESV):

"Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord."

Although Americans seem to be more divided about whose nation this really is, there is no denying that our elected officials need prayer to do their sworn duty more effectively.

Regardless of political preference or religious persuasion, when it comes to peace across our nation, we are a people of prayer for those we elect into office. As an app of more than four million users who practice prayer and Christian meditation, Abide users are vocal about topics that relate to us all, including prayer and politics.

July 4 is right around the corner, so we took an opportunity to survey our users about how they pray, meditate, and use devotionals to ask God for guidance and assist those who influence this great country the most. Some of the answers may surprise you.

For example, only 57% of Americans surveyed pray for President Trump or Vice President Pence. What does that say to you? We should all be asking God to help the president and vice president, so does this speak more to people burned out on the constant media barrage about what is said from the White House (or from Donald Trump’s Twitter handle)?

Of those Abide users who do pray for President Trump and Vice President Pence, 39% do so weekly, 32% pray daily, and 23% are sure to include them in prayers at least once a month.

Let’s look more closely at how Americans pray for our elected officials. They need guidance and God’s help in many areas – not because of the quality of their work but because of the work they are doing on behalf of all of us.

James exhorts us all about something more than 90% of Abide users pray for the president and vice president.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” James 1:5 (NIV).

The Lord knows how important wisdom is to each of us. It is the principal thing (Proverbs 4:7 KJV), so naturally, we want America’s leaders to have it. Over half of all surveyors believe Trump and Pence need more obedience (59%), humility (56%), and peace (54%).

Now that we know what we believe they need, how will President Trump, Vice President Pence, and the rest of our elected officials in Congress use what they receive from God?

With concern about our troops in the Middle East, it’s no surprise prayers about terrorism was the chief request among more than half of those surveyed (53%). The Pew Research Center shares that distrust in the U.S. government remains in the cellar near 20%. It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that prayer against corruption of government officials are second on our list (49%).

From religious freedom to regulations on firearms, peace to patience, Americans have several prayers in mind for our leaders. Whether they approve of them (29%) or disapprove (40%) of the job they are doing, their work can use some help from above and within.

Join us as we all pray for our leaders and Christian meditation to focus on those prayers and seek God’s face. If you have a prayer for President Trump, Vice President Pence, or any of your Senators or Representatives, please let us know in the comments below. We plan on sharing every prayer request with the White House and Congress. Thank you for standing with us.
