Woman asleep on her side in semi-dark room with brown sheets and comforter finds better sleep with Scripture.

How Scripture Can Help You Sleep Better

We all know how important sleep is, but for many of us, we’re not prioritizing sleep. Life is busy. Sleep is probably last on your to-do list, but also that one thing you just can’t seem to get enough of. But did you know that Scripture can help you sleep better?

We know that there are endless benefits of sleep. Sleep can…

  • Keep you (and your heart) healthy
  • Improve your mood
  • Make you more productive
  • Sharpen your brain
  • Help you maintain a healthy weight

With benefits like that, it’s no surprise that sleep is so important. But when life gets in the way, sleep tends to be one of the first things to go. Fortunately, God knows exactly how messy life can get. We’ve all got a lot going on, and He knows it. Which is why He sent His Son to take that weight off our shoulders—helping us live more freely and abundantly, but also to sleep better. Without all those burdens we carry, our bodies and our minds can rest.

God encourages us to rest; He wants us to sleep. In fact, we’re reminded to rest again and again all over the Bible. Let these 4 Bible meditations from Abide help you to sleep better.

Matthew 11:29-30

In Matthew 11, Jesus invites you to “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” If you’ve ever felt beaten down by a hard situation in your life, wondering why you’re still stuck. It can be a helpless and defeating feeling to wonder where God is in those times. Sometimes God uses these situations to pull you even closer to him. He wants to do more than fix your situation, he wants you to trust him in those valleys—to rest in him. God’s got you, the rest is all yours. All you have to do is take it.

Psalm 4

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” Fall asleep to the comforting promise of Psalm 4, as you name and lay your worries down at God’s feet—one by one. Hand your stress over to Jesus tonight, as he instructs us to, and meditate on this good night Bible verse.

Psalm 33:8

You can rest without worry or fear—all night—because while you rest God is watching over you. He is mighty and powerful, and he works all things for good for those who love him. If you put your faith in Jesus, that’s you! Tonight, center your heart and mind on the Word of God in Psalm 33:8, “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him.” As you relax into this promise, feel you everyday worries fade away, as you drift off to sleep.

Romans 6:4

As you prepare for heavenly sleep tonight, turn off all distractions and meditate on Romans 6:4. “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” The great sacrifice, yet precious gift of Jesus, was given to all of us. Because of that, we can sleep better tonight—and every night—in perfect peace, knowing we’re all apart of God’s plan. Enjoy his peaceful presence as you listen to this Bible meditation about sleep.
