10 Best Morning Routines to Start Your Day with Intention

Unless you’re a natural early-bird, getting up in the morning can be a daily hurdle. But a good morning routine can kick off your day in the best way—setting the tone for a productive, stress-free day in God’s light.

Jesus woke up early to spend time with God, and the Bible tells us to do the same. In Psalm 143, we’re reminded, “Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you, I entrust my life.”

As you wake up every morning, trust that God has a plan for you—each and every day. Apart from spending time with the Word, try adding a few of these ideas to your morning routine this week and see how your day changes.

Jump in the Shower

If you prefer a relaxing evening shower, you’re not alone. But, if you’re stressed, a cold shower in the morning can help you have an anxiety-free day. Morning showers improve blood circulation too, as well as simply help wake you up. Try adding a rejuvenating shower to your morning routine this week, and see how you feel.

Get Some Sun

Getting sunlight first thing in the morning is so important. Not only does sunlight boost serotonin, which makes you feel happy and stress-free, it also helps you sleep better at night. By soaking in the sunlight right when you wake up, you’re helping set your body’s natural clock (your circadian rhythm), which can contribute to a better, more restful sleep at night.

Drink Water

It’s important to drink water all day long, but in the morning, it’s particularly vital to start your day with a glass. While you might love that morning cup of coffee, it’s not great for your stomach or hormones to drink it on an empty stomach! Drinking water in the morning will also help lubricate your body, remove waste, and give you more energy.

Positive Affirmation

Starting your day off with positive, Biblical affirmations can help you be more intentional and overcome negative thoughts. Affirmations are simply statements that are meant to be repeated to change the way you think—putting you in a positive headspace in God’s loving embrace.

Try adding one of these affirmations to your morning routine or create your own based on your favorite verse.

  • God hears me.
  • God is my strength.
  • I will trust in Him.
  • I am blessed.
  • I am chosen by God.
  • I am complete in Him.

Make Time for Fun

Having fun is an important part of any balanced lifestyle, so why not add a little fun into your morning routine? If scheduling in 10-minutes of TikTok scrolling or playing video games while you drink your morning cup o’ joe puts you in a good mood, then make time for that every morning. It could even be as simple as having a mini dance party in your living room or telling jokes with your partner over breakfast.

Eat Breakfast

Eating breakfast is the best way to start your day with real, sustainable energy. Without food, you’ll be running on empty, which is no way to start a day! Although we get much of our strength from the Spirit, food is truly a gift from God—the way we nourish our bodies (and souls)—so we can continue to live his word every day. Health-wise, breakfast may improve concentration, improve your metabolism, and contribute to overall better health.

Music

Music is another great way to start your day. Whether you listen to calming sounds to start your day anxiety-free, or you dance to uplifting, happy music to get yourself in a good mood, it’s the perfect thing to add to your morning routine. Journal

Journaling is another thing that many morning people swear by. You can dump down your thoughts, plan out goals, reflect on your day ahead, or practice gratitude. Regular journaling can help you achieve your goals faster while clearing your mind and setting you up for a stress-free day ahead. If you don’t have a paper journal or simply prefer using your phone, you can easily add daily journal entries in the Abide app too.

Stretch

If you’ve ever woken up in the morning with random aches and pains, then you know that stretching first thing is a great way to start your day. But stretching, in general, each morning can also relieve overall tension and increase blood flow, which can help wake you up and set you up for a calm day ahead.

Meditate

There’s never a bad time to meditate, but meditation can secrete endorphins, which make us feel good. So, if you meditate first thing in the morning, you’re basically starting your day with a cup of happiness. Plus, meditation helps clear your mind, which is ideal for starting each day fresh. It only takes a few minutes to meditate, and Abide’s guided faith-based meditations make it easy to start.

All you need are two minutes and the Abide app! Here are some top Abide meditations to help you get started:
